It has been about three weeks since I returned from an amazing trip to Brazil, which could not have happened with out your prayers and financial support. God’s name was proclaimed, many seeds were spread, and lives transformed by God’s grace. I will try and give you a quick run down of events that occurred in the span of six days.
We arrived in Brazil a day late due to airline troubles, as such we arrived around 10:30 am and had practice at 2:00 pm and then again at 7:00 pm. To say it was a whirl wind would be an understatement (as was the whole trip). The first practice set the tone. The team from the states (1 NFL player, 7 college players) brought an intensity that our Brazilian brothers had never experienced, but responded to well. To conclude practice Damione Lewis (1st round draft pick) gave his testimony with the same intensity and passion that the players had experienced in practice demonstrating that the faith we proclaimed was much more than just lip service. Once the whole team broke, we gathered in small groups by position, I had the offensive linemen (this became a bi-daily event at each practice).
In these small group times I was blessed to share my testimony, as well as ask and challenge them on what they thought about “religion” and “church.” This Q and A allowed the players to seek clarification and understanding on topics such as, “What is the gospel,” “Was Jesus a man or spirit,” “What does your religion have to do with Football,” and my favorite, “Why do Christians act one way on Sunday and another way the rest of the week”? These questions allowed me to attempt to articulate God’s saving grace in a personal and authentic way. The verse that quickly became my mantra was 1 Cor. 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink, or what ever you do, do it all for the glory of the God.” I told my men that their goal in life should be to worship and obey God in all they do. I instructed them that in the game of Football that meant that one should hit their opponent as fast and as hard as they could each and every play, with as much intensity and passion as they are capable of, for the glory of God. I then would ask them what that looked like off of the field, which held to more discussions on how Christ should and can impact your life. After that I would generally end our time by stating that we are designed to pursue and obey God with all our heart, soul, and mind with as much intensity and passion as we can, and that means confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord and that He died on the cross for our mistakes and wrong doings, and that He was raised again on the third day to give us life, to enable us to have a personal relationship with His Father.
Other noteworthy events included being interviewed by the local TV sport broadcasters, but perhaps the most jaw-dropping event that occurred was when we were allowed to visit five public schools. At these schools in front of the students, teachers, and some parents, we were allowed to give our testimonies and articulate the gospel of Christ, giving God the glory that He is due, (I acted as the translator). In similar fashion, on the last night we had the opportunity to give our testimonies and answer any questions that the crowd had. Those in attendance included all the players, their families, and many friends; the event was held at a local university. In that hall all heard the gospel, and a few came in private and accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior.
To conclude I want to thank each and every one of you. None of this could have happened with out your support and willingness to assist this ministry. The impact that Christ had on these people was and is profound. The team and the team owners are eager for us to return, and three others trips are already in the works. Once again thank you for your support, and I want to encourage you to keep this ministry in your hearts.
God Bless
Kellen K. Lake
